How do you make your God times more interesting?
I love spending time with Father God, although it wasn’t always this way. I used to struggle with my God times, I knew I should spend time with Father God, I knew being a Christian I should be having God times but I never really found them that interesting. I used to force myself to get up early or stay up a little later in the evening to squeeze in a few prayers and requests then get on with my life.
Don’t get me wrong, I knew the importance of spending time with Father God, I just found it difficult to focus and get quiet. Praying, I had down to a fine art, quick and to the point and I even made sure they weren’t totally self centred by throwing in a few prayers for other people as well (just being honest!).
I had started reading books where people mentioned how the most important part of their day was their God time and how some people spent hours and hours just spending time with Father God. So I knew there had to be more as the thought of making my 20 minute God times any more that 20 minutes was going to take a miracle! Why was it that some people just loved having God times and I just didn’t find it that interesting?
I have to be honest, I can’t give one specific person / book credit, I just knew their hunger for God had a big part to play in the amount of time they spent with Father God. So, I got hungry for Father God!
Firstly, I started to focus my prayer. Instead of praying for everything (blanket praying, as I call it)! I started to pray for specific things. While praying for those specific things instead of repetition praying, I would speak over those specific things how they should be, NOT how they currently were. I wish I could say I saw instant results, but for me it was little by little over a period of time. Slowly I started to see my prayers answered (by the way, I am believing that one day I will start to see instant results with some of my prayers, but those will happen in direct relation with my relationship with Father God). Seeing answers to my prayers really encouraged me and caused me to start to pray for other specific things with the same focus and way of calling the specific thing how they should be!
To be clear, I wasn’t denying their current status by calling things what they should be. I simply no longer believed that it was their permanent state and as I was praying to Father God, all things are subject to change or a change of state!
Now, I am still believing for some of those original prayers to still be answered, but I now know they will be answered because I have now seen my prayers being answered. This, as you can imagine, has made my prayer times more interesting and more exciting at times.
Secondly, I needed to bottom out Matthew 6 verse 33.
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
I knew I had to pray about specific things and was starting to see results from my prayers. But I now needed the majority of my prayer time to do with what Father God put on my heart to pray for. So I choose to take Matthew 6 verse 33 serious and FIRST seek Father God and trust that He will look after the other stuff that was important to me.
Matthew 6 verse 33 had a massive impact on my God time because I stopped focusing on all the little things in my world (although important to me). I choose to simply trust Father God that He would take care of everything and I just got on with pursuing Father God. This stopped me from repetition prayer for my own needs and caused me to focus more of my God time on what Father God wanted me to pray for. This caused me to take my eyes off my stuff and the stuff around me and I started to focus my attention on Father God.
Thirdly, and by far the most important. I discovered that Father God actually wanted to have a relationship with me! This was a game changer. Even though I have been a Christian for many years, religion (a bad word in our house!) had caused me to think that Father God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit where not close, well maybe not Holy Spirit, but definitely not Father God and Jesus. I believed I would have to just read about Father God and Jesus in the Bible or wait until I went to heaven to start to actually get to know Father God or Jesus on a level that was anything more than reading the bible or listening for their still small voices.
Now, I didn’t get this revelation on my own. In my pursuit of making my God times more interesting I read books from people like Heidi Baker, Bill Johnson, Randy Clarke and Kris Vallotton and started to discover that Father God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit actually wanted to have a relationship with me now, on this planet. I didn’t have to make do with what I currently knew about Father God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit. I could actually start to get to know them right now. So what was I waiting for and why hasn’t anyone else told me this before….. (yes, these are frustrated dot, dot, dots! Stupid religion!)
So from this point on, I stopped with the one way God times. No more praying without pausing until I reached the end of my allotted God time. I took the approach that Father God wants to talk to me more than I want to talk to Him, therefore I need to start adding time for Father God, Jesus and Holy Spirit to speak to me. This meant added what initially were uncomfortable pauses or quiet spaces in my God times where I just listened. At first not much happened, but I like to think that Father God wanted to see if I was serious about having a relationship before He started to fill those pauses with His views, opinions and thoughts. Yes, you read correctly, Father God started to talk once I gave Him space to do so. Why hasn’t anyone told me this before? I know I am repeating myself, but this is a game changer: to be in an interesting relationship with the GOD OF THE UNIVERSE, Who single handedly created everything!
Another major point which I think is important to add here. I have heard many times from Bethel Church in Redding California that Father God is in a good mood. What… surely religion says he is angry and busy judging everyone! Thats what I thought until it was explained by Bill Johnson from Redding Church. Since Jesus died for everyone and His blood dealt with sin ONCE AND FOR ALL, Father God has stopped with the judging! Jesus said it best when He said, a new commandment I give you, “Love one another” (John 13 verse 34). Obviously the other commandments still play an important part in the new covenant and the new testament church we live in. Please bear with me as I try and bottom this out! The commandments “Do not kill” and “Do not steal” still play a role, but since Jesus took care of the very thing “SIN” that caused Father God to have to judge us and be angry with us in the first place. Father God now sees all of us through the eyes of Jesus, which is now Grace and Mercy! I hope I got the point across, Father God is very much in a good mood, which means He wants to spend time with you. Which means you shouldn’t be afraid of spending time with Father God just in case you’ve done something wrong. Even if you make a mistake or sin, simply don’t repeat the mistake or repeat the sin, say sorry for the mistake or sin and go spend time with Father God. He is in a good mood and has forgiven you. All because of what His amazing Son did for you and I on that cross. Also, if Father God isn’t angry or busy judging people, don’t you think we should be doing the same? Ok, mini preach over!
God times haven’t been the same since. I am now developing a friendship with Father God, Jesus and Holy Spirit. I am starting to learn the difference between Father Gods voice and the way He talks to me, to that of Jesus’s voice being my older brother and Holy Spirit being my close friend and counsellor.
Quick note, if you struggled with me calling Jesus my older bother! Yes, I said it and yes, its true. If we are adopted into Father Gods family when we are saved and Jesus is Father Gods Son and we are also Father Gods adopted sons and daughters. Then, Jesus is our Brother! To be clear, Jesus is still very much God, but I am His younger adopted brother!
The dynamic in my God times has changed and is still changing. Its far from boring, the Bible is so much more interesting and things make so much more sense now.
I would encourage you to look over these three points and start to develop your own relationship with Father God, Jesus and Holy Spirit during your God time. You will never be the same again.
